Fundraising screening of Waru

JustSpeak invites our Wellington supporters to a special screening of Waru, following sold out screenings at the New Zealand International Film festival and ahead of its general release.

For this film eight talented wāhine directors collaborated to produce a set of eight short vignettes that tell the story of Waru, a small boy killed at the hands of his caregiver. These eight directors tease apart the complexity of child abuse, staring down the central tragedy through the varying lenses of whanau, community, and national media.

Waru has received outstanding reviews, with Mihingarangi Forbes stating it’s “a film everyone in the family should see and talk about”. While the subject matter is confronting, it is essential to engage with if we hope to understand and address child abuse in Aotearoa. So bring your friends, your tissues and compassion and we can cry our way through it together <3
