Our Journey & Impact

Our Journey

In 2011, Tā Kim Workman, founder of Rethinking Crime and Punishment, made a courageous decision. He invited into his office any young person in Pōneke Wellington who wanted to be involved in working towards his vision for a tolerant, safe and inclusive society through restoration, not incarceration.

Young people showed up. The mantle was passed. JustSpeak was formed and a new generation of young people were ready to take a stand for change.

Since its inception JustSpeak has been a voice for change, challenging punitive policies and underinvestment in communities by decision makers.

Over the years, JustSpeak has contributed to a more compassionate and evidence informed public conversation on criminal justice. This has been both through elevating the voices of people with lived experience of the justice system, and through our role as a credible voice in news media and public debate.

JustSpeak has also successfully campaigned to change harmful laws and practices, and in support of alternative responses that genuinely support communities and prevent harm. Its original research has provided much needed support to people working for change from both inside and outside the system.

For almost 15 years, JustSpeak has invested in the capacity, skills, and knowledge of the justice movement, laying strong foundations for the next generation of justice leaders.

We look forward to continuing advocating for a thriving Aotearoa with a fair and equitable justice system for the next 15 years and beyond.
