Justice Unlocked campaign
Date: 9th - 23rd March 2025
Justice Unlocked was a collaborative campaign with grassroots organisations; Mana Inc., Genesis Youth Trust and Mana Mentoring to highlight the experiences and insights of youth justice workers working to address the underlying causes of offending capture stories and recommendations for what they can see is and isn’t working in the youth justice system.
The aim of the campaign was to provide examples to the public of community based alternatives to the justice system and improve people’s understanding, based on best evidence, of why we need a shift in crime and justice policy away from reactive punishment and incarceration and towards prevention, rehabilitation and restoration.
The campaign included:
Interviews with three organisations focused on restorative and wrap around support for young people in the criminal justice system
A nationwide poster campaign in Phantom Billsticker frames, with 60 posters displayed in Auckland, Rotorua, Christchurch, Dunedin, Gisborne and Wellington
An increase in engagement and followers on JustSpeak social media channels.
A campaign event in Glen Innes, Auckland which brought together youth justice community organisations, Members of Parliament, and a group of 30 youth justice professionals and philanthropists from California hosted by Impact Justice, a US-based NGO focused on criminal justice reform.
